Sending a large amount abroad? See what the exchange-rate margin costs

On a transfer of 10,000 to 500,000 the exchange-rate margin is usually the biggest cost. Use the calculator to compare what a bank margin and a specialist broker's margin would cost on your amount, then request real quotes.

Bank figure: the middle (median) margin of 327 fresh bank quotes in our live data (2026-10-22) is 2.21% below the mid-market rate; the middle half of quotes sits between 0.93% and 3.03%. These quotes come from Wise's public comparison data (Wise competes with brokers and banks), cover about USD 1,000 transfers across many routes, and are only a starting point: banks price large transfers differently and your bank may differ โ€” use its actual quote.

What to ask any provider for a large transfer

  • The exact rate and the amount that will arrive, so you can calculate the margin against the mid-market rate yourself.
  • Every fixed fee, including any fee your bank or the recipient's bank adds.
  • Limits and checks for large sums, and how long the money takes.
  • Whether the provider is licensed in your country, and how client money is held.
  • Whether you can fix a rate in advance (a forward contract) if the timing of the payment matters โ€” and the terms if you change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

What is the exchange-rate margin and why does it matter on large transfers?

The margin is the gap between the rate you are given and the mid-market rate. It is charged on the whole amount, so on 100,000 a margin of 1% costs 1,000 while 0.5% costs 500 โ€” often far more than any fixed fee.

Are specialist brokers always cheaper than banks?

No. That is why this page lets you enter both quotes. Many brokers price large transfers individually, so ask for a quote, set it against your bank's, and compare the amount that would arrive in the recipient's account. FX Skipper does not know your quote.

What should I check before sending a large amount?

Compare the exact amount received, any fixed or intermediary fees, transfer limits and identity checks for large sums, how long the money takes, and whether the provider is licensed in your country. FX Skipper compares prices only and is not financial advice.
